It's important to note that the relative lack of deckbuilding options is more a product of the age of the game, rather than a function of the game's design.

IIRC, by the end of the Dunwich cycle we will have more than double the number of player cards available to us, compared to the core set alone.

It seems like there are lots of places where fixing one thing in the rules breaks another. The moon fly-by is an extreme example, where there's a new icon the board that actually has less information than the regular icon, but which has some minor rule difference in a particular variant. To me this is a head-scratcher. Who is the game for? The small percentage of people playing with that variant? Or everyone else?

The various proposals for dealing with how ISRU, site size, and hydration all interlock demonstrate some of this as well. The proposal to increase hydration is defeated by colony caps - except that those could be their own icon. Shoving everything into one icon, and asking the players to remember that for prospecting it's this, for refueling it's that, and for colonies it's the third thing defeats the purpose. Sure, you've encoded a lot of information into that one symbol, but in doing so you have made the symbol much more difficult to interpret.

I hear a lot of people defending the game by saying "it's meant to be complicated." I'll paraphrase Einstein in response: the game should be as simple as possible, but no simpler. I believe we can improve comprehension and gameplay with minimal sacrifice on the realism side, by simply doing a better job with information design and usability. I can't imagine why anyone would be opposed to that.

Thread: Gloomhaven:: Rules:: Stun vs. Retaliate, Stun vs. Shield - Monster "Native" abilities (on the monster card)

Board Game Geek - Marketplace - Sun, 04/09/2017 - 08:13

by Domyarus

The FAQ reads the following:

"If a monster has bonuses like "Shield" or "Retaliate" on their ability card, is that active for the whole round?
No, bonuses only become active once the monster takes their turn based on the initiative on the ability card. It then lasts until the end of the round, where it will either get shuffled back into the deck or replaced with the next round's ability card.

How are these bonuses affected by stunning a monster?
Note that the bonuses are not simply given by the monster ability card. Monsters would have to perform a "Shield 1" action to gain the Shield 1, so these bonuses only activate if a monster is not stunned on its turn."

The "Ability Card" referred to here I take to mean their "Attack Modifier Card"; is this correct or not?

My interpretation of the FAQ is, if a Monster is stunned, they are unable to 'perform' a shield or retaliation maneuver as they are unable to "use any abilities" until the end of the following turn.

Please verify.

(Apologies, as there are lots of posts giving very specific examples and lots of arguments around which is correct or not; should something be able to retaliate if stunned or not - my thinking is, a retaliation is in response to an attack, if stunned, you cannot respond to an attack - e.g. if I hit you on the head with a frying pan and stun you...!)

Hi Robert,

Yes, if using the TANGA 1914 - SEQUENCE OF PLAY TEMPLATE, the following phase applies, even if not referred to in the rules or reference card:

Remove Retreat markers at the end of each phase.

Thread: Little Circuses:: General:: Rules and errata pack availability?

Board Game Geek - Marketplace - Sun, 04/09/2017 - 08:11

by olsonjj25

I just downloaded the errata pack and it mentions 'using the sticker sheet provided'. Is IDW making this available for folks with misprinted games/rules? I don't see anything on their website.

Also, two notes too on the provided errata files:

- The images on the cards and icons are decidedly low res (the text is good) and I'm leery of spending the time to print, cut, and paste. Are higher res versions available if I have to go this route?
- Will corrected updated rules be available and posted?

Thanks - seems odd to me that this game has gotten so little attention/notice. Were review copies sent out? Components - misprints aside - are excellent and clearly lots of thought and attention was put into it...seems like a fun little family game that deserves more attention.

Thanks,
Josh

Thread: Too Many Bones:: Rules:: Thick skin and careless on same mob

Board Game Geek - Marketplace - Sun, 04/09/2017 - 08:09

by skeletonfish

Wondering how these interact, the wording is different enough that it gave us pause.

Careless states the unit loses 1 life while tough skin states ignore the first damage done.

Is losing life the same thing? Would a troll rompers tough skin prevent the careless damage assuming it hadn't been hit that turn?

As you seem to want a name that won't be similar to anyone else's, then the first option, Zetta, is certainly the most unique, and the most likely to remain unique.
